Republicans versus Democrats. Progressives versus conservatives. Pro-life versus pro-choice. Even mask wearers versus non-mask wearers. Nothing divides like politics because nothing divides like fear. Fear is the jet fuel of modern-day politics. America is more afraid, and thus more divided, than at any time since the Civil War. Candidates from both parties stoke the flames of fear to get Christians’ votes. This effort to turn the Church into a voting block divides congregations and denominations. It sets brother against brother and sister against sister. In opposition to this political division stands the Church of Jesus Christ, whom Jesus prayed would be one. Defined by love – a perfect love that casts out all fear – the Church is divinely positioned to demonstrate unity in the midst of political polarity. A unity that points a fearful world to Jesus.
