SELF SERVE

Playing nice with others: it’s one of the first lessons we teach our children, yet we struggle to practice it as adults. We aren’t surprised by the selfishness of toddlers. Sharing their shiny new toys doesn’t come naturally. It isn’t any more natural for grown-ups either. If we’re completely honest, most of our lives are dominated by the first-person pronouns I, me, and mine. That doesn’t mean we can’t learn to serve. Or love. Or get along with others. Fact is, if you’re going to experience the Christ-life to which you are called it starts with selflessness. We can serve wholeheartedly. We can love unflinchingly. And, together, we can overcome evil with good and make this world a far better place. But to do that you have to embrace one of the Bible’s most enigmatic ideas: to live for others – that is, to live like Jesus – you first have to die to yourself.
