Rewriting Christmas
Much of the Christmas story is saturated with myth and overlaid with our traditions. The images and ideas of our childhood can even impact our recollection of the incarnation more than scripture. For Christians whose faith is steadfast this is not particularly problematic. Or is it? What if the way we traditionally remember Christmas not only causes us to miss the deep richness of Christ’s coming, but also prevents those who are naturally skeptical of the incarnation from coming to faith? Peeling away the layers of tradition to get to Jesus’ historical birth narrative doesn’t mean losing the wonder of Christmas. In fact, separating fact from fiction and historical context from tradition might just help us discover that the real story of Christmas is richer than we ever realized.
