He Said What?

Ever have one of those experiences where someone says something really confrontational? Where everyone else in the room suddenly starts staring at their shoelaces? There were times when Jesus comforted people who were in distress, but there were just as many times when he said something that was distressing to those who were too comfortable. One of his frequent targets were the spiritual elites, those who took pride in their self-righteousness. In perhaps his most famous sermon Jesus went beyond the letter of the law and challenged his listeners to embrace a new spirit of the law. Jesus went beyond action to attitude. He set a higher standard then, and he expects us to live up to that higher standard now.
