Songs and Sayings

Psalms and Proverbs are part of the Bible we call “wisdom literature.” Though many of these songs, poems and couplets were written in response to specific events affecting individuals or the nation of Israel, the contain wisdom for the ages. Psalms affirm who God is; Proverbs affirm who we are supposed to be. Psalms contain worship directed at God; Proverbs contain wisdom that comes from God. When we read Psalms we better understand God’s divine nature; when we read Proverbs we better understand human nature. Psalms reveal an uncommon God and Proverbs reveal common sense. Psalms is one of the most widely read books in the Jewish scriptures because it represents the entire range of human emotions: thanksgiving, lament, fear and faith, rescue and redemption. Emotions we are feeling right now.
