Esther
Script writers understand the concept of peripety – the surprising great reversal. Luke discovers Darth Vader is his father. Bruce Willis’ Sixth Sense character, it turns out, was dead all along. It is a staple of every Hallmark movie – the millionarie chooses the maid; the scheming gold digger is dumped. God is the master of the great reversal. He chose a nobody, Abraham, to become Father of a great nation. A betrayed brother called out of his prison cell became Prime Minister of Egypt. The Son of God threw off the pall of death to defeat Satan and made reconciliation with God possible for all who choose Jesus. Esther is such a special story because it reminds us that God is at work in the background. He hasn’t given up on His people. Even though they’re in exile and even in a story where his name isn’t mentioned, He’s still orchestrating the great reversal.
