Not Your Average Joe
Shortly after his birth Jesus’ parents carried him to Egypt to escape murderous King Herod. It was a route similar to the one Joseph took eighteen centuries earlier when he was sold into slavery. One of Jacob’s twelve sons, Joseph’s story is a tale of betrayal, redemption and God’s sovereign grace working through Joseph to save His people. But it is much more. Joseph’s life foreshadows Jesus. Joseph went from favorite son to slave. Jesus set aside his divine status to become a servant. Joseph was wrongfully accused; so was Jesus. Joseph served his sentence between two convicted criminals; so did Jesus. In each instance one criminal was saved while the other perished. Joseph’s prison companions were a sommelier and a baker. The night before Jesus died he instituted a sacred meal of bread and wine. What was intended for evil: the destruction of Joseph – and Jesus – ended up saving God’s people.
