Colossians
Is Jesus God, or is he just a god? Paul answered that question in a letter to Christians living in the farming town of Colossae. Former Jewish mystics and Gentile pagans, these new Christians struggled to believe that Jesus was the one true God and not just one of many. Paul set the record straight, confirming Jesus’ claim that: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” Jesus exclusivity was unpopular then and it is unpopular now. For the Colossians, “Jesus is God,” meant Zeus isn’t. Artemis isn’t; Isis isn’t; Athena isn’t; Caesar isn’t! Fast forward to today: in a world that increasingly rejects Christ’s claim to deity, “Jesus is God,” means that Christ is paramount. And, ultimately, it means that I am not.
