Point of View

Each person instinctively sees the world from one point of view: his or her own. If it is natural that we struggle to see the world from another person’s perspective how much more difficult it is for us to see the world from God’s point of view. Mark wrote his gospel to encourage beleaguered Christians. Written just before the Romans sacked Jerusalem, in an environment where Christians faced persecution, Mark reminded his readers that taking up their crosses and following Jesus was not done in vain. There was hope even when they failed as disciples. At the peak of his popularity and again on two subsequent occasions Jesus reminded his disciples of God’s purpose. Time and again he helped them shift their view of power, people, and God’s plan away from their own point of view to God’s. It isn’t natural, but it is critical that disciples learn to see life from God’s point of view. Because that’s the only way we see the way things really are.
