Twenty centuries ago an angel appeared to shepherds watching over their flocks in a Bethlehem pasture. He told them, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Good news. Those words still make our hearts beat faster, because there are some words that are more emotive than their simple meaning – words like “freedom,” and “home.” The words, “good news” were like that for the shepherds, because those words came wrapped in 700 years of history and hope. When the shepherds heard those words, they would have instantly recalled the prophet Isaiah and his prophecies. When Isaiah wrote, “good news,” it meant that God was going to restore the fortunes of his people. What was wrong would be made right; the rough places would be made smooth. With the birth of the Christ child, God was doing something new, something that changed everything. And here’s the thing: Jesus’ birth is our good news, too.
