Peace In the Storm
ental illness is the only illness you will ever experience where someone from the church doesn’t offer to bring you a casserole. For too long the church has remained silent about the unseen emotional struggles with which many Christians contend. After all, Christians don’t get depressed, right? And if they ever do isn’t that symptom of a lack of faith? The truth is, some of the greatest people of faith struggled with bouts of melancholy: Job, King David, Elijah and Jeremiah all struggled with depression. Even preachers are not exempt: Charles Spurgeon, one of England’s greatest orators struggled with depression his whole life. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any hope. There is incredible hope for people who struggle with depression, and that hope often comes in the form of God’s people offering a helping hand to their brothers and sisters who are hurting.
